nisha from las vegas.

Hello to all our sisters & brothers in dance...

I have an announcement regarding one of our beloved friends & teachers in the community, Carolee Cameron. Unfortunately, Carolee has been recently diagnonsed with Breast Cancer. And upon further testing, they have discovered that the cancer has already spread to her lymph nodes. This means that she will soon be facing chemo, radiation, and a possible full mastectomy.

Carolee is handling all of this with much positive and courageous enthusiasm. She even said that she would be grateful to lose her leg hair as it would mean she wouldn't have to shave anymore!! Talk about seeing the silver lining! I love her!

However, Carolee does have some financial concerns. She is going to need to take at least 6 weeks off of work to go through treatment. She only has 6 days of sick time remaining. The Intensive is going to give her enough money for one week off. But that still leaves 4 more weeks uncovered.

So...I know that our community can rise to the occassion and help raise the needed funds for Carolee.

Any other fundrasier ideas would also be appreciated. I'm completely open to doing a car wash. We can do it at the Durango studio on a Sunday sometime.

Also, no matter what your spiritual affiliation, if you have any spiritual practice...please send healing prayer, universal engery, positive thoughts, or what have you to Carolee.

I have really enjoyed my time with you and hope you have enjoyed our class as well. If you are interested in dancing during the summer, my summer session is every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm from May 27th through June 26th. http://tmcc.augusoft.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=1010

The majority of the intermediate/advanced class will be performing this weekend as part of Strange Bedfellows, the annual TMCC spring dance concert. Come and support your fellow dancers by attending a performance Friday or Saturday night at 7:30 or Sunday at 2pm. The dance concert is held at the Redfield Theater in the Keystone Shopping Center. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission. http://www.tmcc.edu/vparts/seasonschedule/

Because the majority of the intermediate/advanced class will be performing, there will be no advanced class this Friday. I encourage those not performing to come to the early class from 5:30-6:45pm. We will be playing the “Hat Game.”

Thanks and have a fabulous day!

All the pieces to the costume belonged to my troupe director, Rossah, and have a great sentimental value. I'm hanging flyers around my neigborhood in an attempt to maybe get them back (I mean, unless they know a bellydancer, what would they do with a belly dance costume?)

What was stolen was all in a retro white suit case and it included blue harem pants, a bronze belt & coin bra, a ghawazee black coat, a nickel alloy headpiece, cuffs, and necklace.

please, if anyone sees these items at the flea market, thrift stores buy them and please return! I will reimburse you for whatever they cost you.
I'm also offering a reward for the pieces.

These are some of my thoughts about Rakkasah 2008, presented in no particular order.

•The seating. Not enough, and the chairs in front of the speakers were useless and uncomfortable. I saw some people wearing. A center aisle is needed in the food building. Was tough to get in and out of the middle.

•The placement of the speakers. Awkward for the audience to sit in front of them

•The class I took had to contend with maintenance person changing lights during the instruction. Our instruction was accompanied by the beep-beep of the reach equipment moving around to complete the task. Should have been done another time. Really took away from the class, which already wasn’t that great.

•Stage lighting in the food building was too orangey and yellow.

•Pretty unimpressed by Suhalia’s performance on Sunday. Too long and kinda blah.

•The Gem Show people were annoying.

•There seemed to be less vendors and some of the ones that were there had fewer products.

•Cranky vendors. Several of the vendors I had dealings with were cranky. Not sure what that was about, but it makes it hard to patronize someone’s business that doesn’t seem to have the time or perceived desire to assist with purchases.

•Naming of the stages. Just call them by the building names. I missed a couple of performances I really wanted to see because I got the stages mixed up.

•The distance between stages. I felt like two separate events going on because of the distance between the buildings. I ended up not spending as much time in the other building because of the hassle of going back and forth. While the weather was great this year, what about subsequent years if there is inclement weather? That dash between stages will be uncomfortable and awkward.

•Paying for parking. Not only do I have to for over $12 to get in, but an additional $5 a day for parking for $17 a day entry fee. Even with an advance ticket, the extra $15 for the three days has just cut out an entire vendor or food purchase. I understand that the event doesn’t get this money that it goes to the fairgrounds, but that still doesn’t mitigate my budget.

•The shoe police guy at the after party chasing people down who weren’t wearing shoes around the lobby area. Heeelllloooo….we are belly dancers here…..part of the outfit dude. I understand it is a safety and health issue, but sheesh.

•Vendor parking and pack up was a nightmare. Definitely need some reorganization here.

•No seating for food court. If it hadn’t been nice outside, it would have been much worse.

•The location with regards to getting there. From Northern Nevada it was I-80 all the way, and then less than a ¼ mile jaunt to the hotel drive way.

•The hotel was very nice. My room was comfortable and clean and quiet. The staff was very nice and accommodating.

•Nearby convenience store for my Pepsi fix and other dining options.

•Walking distance to the event. For the most part it really was, except late at night it felt unsafe. I think that was mostly because I was in an unfamiliar area.

•Safety. Heads and shoulders above Richmond. I didn’t feel like I was going to get mugged or worse every time I stepped out of the building.

•The stages. I really liked having the side and front views of the stages. Nice to have a different perspective, instead of just straight on.

•My Rakkasah shirt, which I have already blinged up. Photos to follow.

•Taking my friend to her first Rakkasah and hearing her comments during and afterward. Always fun to see it through the eyes of a newbie.

•The afternoon sun coming in through the windows of whichever stage it was and bathing the performers in sunlight. The dancers and costumes in natural light were really beautiful.

•The Knights of Santiago. Helpful and professional as always.

•Weather for the drive home. I know no one has control over it, but it was pleasant not to have to fight a blizzard on Donner.

•The after party at the hotel was great. The band was high energy the crowd was well mannered. The military guys were a hoot. I really liked being able to hang with everyone and then know that they and I would be able to safely make it back our rooms.

•The secured location of the fairgrounds made it comfortable and nice to be able to take a breather outside and feel safe.

•Bathroom facilities a little scant, but hey, they worked and were well stocked for the most part.

•The dressing area for the dancers was nice. Great to not have to try and dodge the people in the bathroom.

We lost our space at Boomtown and none of the others are able to help us out. The ones we could fit into were booked for that time and others were too overly priced or the terms weren't appropriate for our event. Some just weren't big enough and we really don't want to downsize the event.

Now I know a few of you are going to be irritated because there will be classes you want to take the conflict with each other. I am offering my apologies in advance. *sigh*...if only I had 2 full weeks of classes to fill...then we might have no conflicts. heehee.

Additionally, just because the schedule is done does not mean that I have all the bios/photos/& class descriptions from everyone. Nor is the shopping cart finished. So, for the moment, just the schedule is all I can offer. I know it's a teaser, but it will have to suffice for the moment.

Those of you who have already registered, as soon as I have the shopping cart finished, you will get to actually pick your classes. You will have first dibs!!

I previously stated that once the schedule was done that the price was going up to $295 for the weekend. Well... I also said it wouldn't be done until Jan. 1st. So this is your big chance to sneak in under the radar and register for the Super Early-Bird special. Payment plans are still available and you'll get first shot at the popular classes.

It was PACKED! I believe it was something like 25 acts; 2 solid hours of dancing. It was awesome :) Lisa's brother is a professional hula dancer and danced for us. He is SO CUTE (and definately in the future ex-husband category meeeoooow). The swing club from Fallon was so adorable. I love it when boys dance but it's even better when they're flinging their partners around the floor and they're all like 14 years old.
The ME dance community came out in full force. My highlights were Ireena's Turkish Rom, Rabia...anything Rabia including Yalla Habibi and Namira (so beautiful in blue). I love my students and they were awesome (I wanna move)!! And lots of big love for Asha. I loved Naga. It looked supah!
But all in all, I'd be surprised if we didn't hit the $1,000 mark. And of that, Pam donated $400 just from her Mary Kay sales in November and the beginning of December. AMAZING!!

So we have a local reporter who goes around and works a new profession every week and does a write-up in the Las Vegas Review Journal. He contacted me back in September and I referred him to our amazing local dancer, Farasha.

So a week ago on Saturday, a group of us went to the restaurant where they were going to be filming his "debut". hahahaha. It was hysterical. Especially because they didn't announce anything about why he was there. He just came out and started moving. I don't think the room knew what to do!!! Hahahahaha.

I was really nervous about what he would write in the article because he kept asking me tons of questions about male bellydancers and I just didn't want him to put a lousy spin on it. He even asked me if I would agree to the statement that "nobody wants to see a male bellydancer". And I absolutely refused. I told him that if more people could see Jim Boz & Tito of Egypt then American women would be begging for more male bellydancers.

So the article is on the humerous side, but it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Hahahahaha. Farasha is, of course, BRILLIANT!!!

The group of us that came to watch Corey & Farasha are in the third
picture on the right side. And they even caught me throwing money at
them in the video. ROFL.
ZAMNA AVILA
RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
Posted: 10/2/2007

For Melony Kuo and her 15-year-old daughter Sarah Yang, spending quality time together can be a workout.

So, after taking eight years of martial arts and achieving black belts in aikido, the pair has decided to try something different.

"I've always fancied dancing," said Kuo, 49. "I'll do whatever keeps me flexible."

The two Sparks residents recently signed up for a belly dancing class offered through the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department at the Sparks Senior Center.

The exotic Middle Eastern dances offer women, and even some men, a place to congregate and just have fun, class instructor Kay Conley-Rawson said.

"It's fun to go to a class where you can dance for yourself when you don't have a spouse that loves to dance, too," Conley-Rawson said. "You enjoy dancing but you don't need a partner to do it, and you meet a lot of women who also feel the same way."

Conley-Rawson, who has 13 years of experience in belly dancing, said the dance also helps women improve their self-esteem.

"I make the women stand in certain ways that makes them look taller and more confident, Conley-Rawson said. "They learn to be more aware of their bodies, more comfortable with their bodies and more confident."

Unlike other forms of dance, belly dancing is welcoming to all women, whether they are young or old, thin or large, of one ethnic background or another, said Andi Hill, an intermediate belly dance student.

"I don't think you have a support system in other dancing as you have in belly dancing," said Hill, who also has taken jazz and ballroom dancing in the past and has been taking belly dancing classes for five years. "(Other dance systems) want you to have a certain skill level or look. With belly dancing, everyone is beautiful."

Moreover, there are other benefits to taking a belly dancing class, Hill said. After two car accidents and a lengthy period of physical therapy, Hill decided to take the advice of a friend and try belly dancing as a form of therapy and exercise. The first few classes were painful, but she had so much fun that she continued going until the pain dissipated, she said.

"Belly dancing is about isolating muscles," said Hill, 44. "I was working out muscles I didn't even know I had. I have better movement, I can do a lot more muscle isolation, and I have less pain."

A key to the success of the class is the instructor. Conley-Rawson uses humor, analogies and tactile methods to convey her knowledge of the dance.

Sometimes she places her student's hands on her hips for them to understand a movement. Other times, she describes the moves they need to make as everyday tasks the women can relate to their lives, such as carrying groceries, carrying a baby and closing a car door while carrying a baby and groceries.

"If a paper bag (of groceries) is too heavy, we bring our hip forward and hold the extra weight of the bag," she said. "That's called the forward hip lift. If we have a 2-year-old (child) who wants to be held, we are going to shift our weight out and put the baby on the hip. That's called a side hip lift. If you have groceries in one hand, baby in the other and you have to close the car door, you take one buttocks and close your door with it. That's called a back hip lift."

Conley-Rawson also uses both ancient and modern beats to teach her class. She doesn't worry about the lyrics, but she finds rhythms to her liking that help in making her class enjoyable, she said.

But belly dancing isn't for everyone, Conley-Rawson said. There are three categories of students: those who love taking the classes for the exercise and the social aspects; the ones who love to dress up in the outfits; and the ones who want to perform.

"Once you get into (belly dancing) you either love it or you are like, 'I don't have rhythm to do this,'" she said. "I let them do their thing, and I try to make it interesting for them. It's a lot of fun and very colorful."

Kuo, a postal worker, said she takes pleasure in all of the above.

"I enjoy the fact that everything is coming from the center," she said. "You've got to have balance. And, most of all I like the jingles (placed around the waist), I gotta get those jingles."

Melony Kuo, 49, of Sparks, practices belly dancing during the Wednesday class.

If you go
What: Sparks Parks and Recreation belly dance classes
When: Beginning class is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; intermediate class is from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Continuous six-week sessions are available.
Where: Sparks Senior Center, 97 Richards Way
Cost: $42 for non-Sparks residents, $35 for Sparks residents taking the six-week session course. Walk-in students pay $7 per class day.

We can also teach choreography, combos, balancing techniques (for tray, cane, sword), PURE, innovative veil techniques....the list goes on... let me know if you want to me to provide more information here...

At Tribal Fest 7, the crowd was cheering "I WANT A PONY!"
If you have not seen this show, you have not yet lived! It is the most exciting performance I have seen since the very first time I saw Rachel Brice drop to the floor in a layback. The 'Pony Play' is pure genius! Believe me ~ get in your car, get in a plane, and get your asses to Vegas ~ you cannot miss this workshop and two different performance sets!!!!

UNMATA is a professional, multi-award-winning, bellydance fusion troupe based in Sacramento, CA . Formed in 2003 by Hot Pot Studio’s artistic director Amy Sigil, UNMATA’s current members are Shelly DeCant, Luna Taylor, Casey Staub, and Kari VanderZwaag. The high-energy teamforce of UNMATA is known for extreme choreography, inventive Tribal improvisation, and for tapping into an unmistakable divine inebriation on and off stage. UNMATA’s 2007 agenda includes teaching and performing their distinct “Tough Love” style internationally, tri-hosting the first annual Tribal Throwdown in March, and producing the Seventh Annual Blood Moon Regale in Sacramento on Halloween weekend. UNMATA holds the 2007 title “Tribal Fusion Group of the Universe.”

Amy Sigil is owner and director of Hot Pot Studio in Sacramento , CA , home of UNMATA. For the past decade, Amy has been developing, teaching, and performing modern bellydance fusion and her distinct vocabulary of Improvisational Tribal Style. She danced as half of Haruspicy Dancecraft for several years, and then formed the
professional fusion troupe UNMATA in 2003. UNMATA has brought home awards such as Bellydance Troupe of the Year 2004, Bellydance Troupe USA 2004, Ensemble of the Year 2005, and Tribal Fusion Group of the Universe 2007.

On July 28th and 29th Amy Sigil brings UNMATA to Las Vegas for a 2-day workshop and two performances!!!

“UNMATA au naturel” July 28th from 10am to 3pm
Featured 2006 Workshop

This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA’s modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance.

Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe’s choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement, then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.

“Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style” July 29th from 10am to 3pm

Amy’s Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate to advanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this
class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.

Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Just 15 minutes from Downtown Reno. It is 1800 sq. ft. with large rooms. New tile floor in the Kitchen and Laundryroom/pantry. New pergo floor in the Hallway (Pergo is great for kids, because you can't hurt it). New paint through out most of the house. On an acre zoned for horses.
